~A Domestic Dispute~

Derek spent the entire weekend at a review for National Boards so I decided to take on about 5 projects to keep myself busy…

Valentines pillow- done.
Valentines mobile- done.
Sew tablecloths for young women- done.

Man I was on a ROLL.

Well- that was yesterday. Derek spends Tuesday afternoons at an eye clinic and since the wives are always sending goodies with their husbands, one of the students suggested a “Mormon Wife Bake-Off” this week.

That is where the story gets ugly people.

You see, where the Lord giveth he taketh away also. Feeling like a confident domestic diva, I called my mom for a recipe, and ran to the store this morning to get a few more supplies I need for 7-layer cookie bars. You’ve made them right? They are easy.

Except when they came out of the oven I realized that the graham cracker crust didn’t set and they completely crumbled to pieces. Ok- pressure is now on because remember these are for the “Mormon Wife Bake-Off” and I got to represent. So as Derek and I tried to salvage and make another crust I took the bowl of hot butter out of the microwave and it dropped out of my hand and went on pretty much every surface of my kitchen. Not to mention burning my hand and splattering all over my boots. My “took all winter to finally get them and this is only the 3rd time I’ve worn them perfect color and now splattered with butter oil boots.” Grrrrrrrr……

Ok- so I say forget the cookies right? Oh, no. I am no quitter. We do our best and I send Derek off with not the most beautiful cookies, but they sure are yum. And that actually made it all better for a moment. Well, about 30 seconds after we get done mopping butter and Derek is off to clinic I go back to the kitchen to start dishes and when I pick up the cookie sheet full of crumbs I forget it is STILL HOT and as a reflex- yep I dropped it. All over. Yet again every surface covered. I am just standing in my kitchen once again looking at the huge mess I have created. So I laugh right out loud and wonder what my parents or sisters would say if they were in this moment with me. I am notorious for spilling things, but even for me this was a new level of clumsiness. I am talking full blown Bella moment. (Your welcome Twilight lovers). why oh why didn't take a picture?

So I left it there. The huge mess and took Easton to the library. Isn’t that so irresponsible of me? Sometimes you just have to walk away. Get out of the kitchen.

Now I need to go make dinner. Heaven help me.

I love love love the pillows and the mobile. You are so creative. Laughing about the cookie disaster, only because I've done the same type of thing. It only happens when I am short on time so I need it to turn out, and I am bringing it to someone or somewhere other than my dinner table. It's just the way it goes. So sorry about the boots though. That is a major bummer. I sure hope you picked an easy dinner, maybe something microwavable or frozen:)

Wow! I so saw myself doing the same thing as I read about your cookie drama...I am no baker either, that is for sure! Plus I could totally see you doing that and that made me laugh even harder! Some things just don't change, not matter how much time passes...you still make me laugh!

So am I your competition since Derek and Chad have clinic together. I didn't know they were judging our treats, I sent cookies last week. Chad said the 7 layer bars were good, so no worries if they got eaten you've been victorious! This was such a funny post, but I hate Tuesdays because Dr. Horn keeps them SO long...probably I was just grumpy after not seeing my husband for 4 days and then a late clinic night to make it 5. Oh well. I LOVE your pillows, I wish I could sew those are darling. And I haven't forgotten our picture shoot, I'm just waiting for our lives to slow down a bit, I'll be calling though.

Char,

That is funny about your cookie mishap. I had the same problem once for a cookie bar recipe that I was making for a Relief Society thing. I think it has happened to all of us...

This obviously is a little late - but maybe it would help you for next time. I love those 7 layer bar cookies, but I could never find a good recipe for them. Then I found this recipe. It is super easy and tastes yummy. If you wanted to add nuts or anything else, I'm sure you could. You would just have to increase the sweetened condensed milk so they wouldn't be too dry.

1 1/2 c. graham cracker crumbs
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 c. semi sweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 c. flaked coconut

Mix all together. Pressed into a greased 8x11 inch pan. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.

That's it! I love easy recipes! :)

Its a really funny story! But honestly I just want to hug you and say, it will be ok! That moment sounds like a melt down (no pun intended!) waiting to happen. You were good to get out while your sanity was mostly intacked! Love you girl. If that happens in St. George, you just hop in your car and cruise on over to my house. We'll find someway to make it better!

DUDE i want a pillow like that! those are so rad! Goodness gracious my life would be so boring and unlively with you and your family! And my hair would look gross for all my major senior year of high school events. Thank goodness you've been here! And then when i go to BYU i will be able to visit! Happy days.
